MVGA editorial graphic: Caguaripano: freedom cannot wait for the next political calendar

A name that must remain visible

For MVGA, Juan Carlos Caguaripano occupies a place among the Venezuelans who personally assumed the risk of confronting Maduro. His story raises an uncomfortable question for any leadership that presents itself as a representative of the resistance: what continuity does it offer to those who end up paying the cost of confrontation with years of their lives?

We claim it for that personal commitment and for the obligation to prevent the confinement from turning it into an occasional name. A policy that aims to liberate the country must be able to sustain attention on a specific person for years. Families know the difference between seasonal solidarity and lasting company.

What the documents allow us to affirm

The IACHR granted precautionary measures in favor of Juan Carlos Caguaripano on June 8, 2018. It considered that his rights to health, life and integrity faced a serious and urgent risk of irreparable harm. The resolution includes allegations and responses from the parties and requests state protection. A precautionary measure responds to a risk; does not amount to a criminal ruling on each complaint contained in the application. Resolution 42/2018, measure 798-17.

Foro Penal reported on August 26, 2026 of the appeal hearing of the Paramacay case. Its publication identified Caguaripano among those prosecuted for the events of August 2017 and placed a thirty-year sentence in December 2025. Lawyer Luis Armando Betancourt announced that they would request the annulment of the proceedings. These data are attributed to the organization's report and the defense's position. Penal Forum, August 26, 2026.

The Foro Penal update of October 14, 2026 reported a decision ordering another hearing, instead of the final ruling expected by the defense. The organization denounced an unfair delay. At the time of going to press, on October 16, 2026, the sources consulted kept the case open and did not provide confirmation of his freedom. It is advisable to preserve that date when sharing the text. Paramacay case update.

Family time also counts

Political calendars turn years into campaigns, negotiations and changeovers. For a family, each year of confinement contains absent birthdays, health that must be attended to, and an uncertainty that occupies daily life. That difference must enter into any leadership balance. The success of a strategy cannot be measured solely by its ability to retain an audience.

Our criticism of the opposition is based on that demand. Whoever asks for trust must explain what mechanisms they maintain to accompany these cases, what results they obtain and how they respond when a path fails. Political representation entails an obligation to be accountable for the effectiveness of what is promised. The notoriety of a leader does not replace that response.

This criticism must recognize the verifiable work of lawyers, family members and human rights defenders. The file shows that there are people supporting the case. Erasing their efforts with an indiscriminate condemnation of everyone would be unfair. What we demand is that this perseverance have the national relevance it deserves.

Claim your courage

Caguaripano allows us to discuss the value of standing up to a structure that punishes dissent. For MVGA, this value deserves to be part of a public memory that is not subordinated to the prestige of the parties. Organizations can disagree with a decision and still have the obligation to defend the integrity and guarantees of the person who made it.

Editorial recognition of your bravery does not make every decision infallible. An adult memory allows us to examine objectives, results and consequences. This is precisely why you need documents and not automatic labels. Power should not be given the power to close a historical discussion for the simple fact of having locked up its protagonist.

The case also raises a demand for the future Venezuela. We want institutions capable of processing accusations, examining evidence and protecting rights without turning the process into an indefinite punishment. The firmness of the State is also measured by its ability to respond to a defense and explain its decisions.

An obligation that does not expire

MVGA will keep its name along with sources and update dates. That is an editorial commitment that can be fulfilled: keep the file visible, distinguish a complaint from a judicial decision and correct any information that changes. A rumor of release should not circulate as a confirmed victory while a family continues waiting.

Venezuelan freedom has faces. Caguaripano is one of them. Claiming it implies demanding that politics preserve memory of those who took the risk and measure their work by something more than the next call. Our position supports their dignity and demands effective guarantees, sustained public attention and a justice response that can be examined.
